Keswick City Guide

Keswick is a market town located in the Borough of Allerdale, which is found in Cumbria, England. The town is rather small with a population of just under 5,000 according to the 2001 census. Keswick can be found north of the Derwent Water, and is on the A66 road that links Workington and Penrith. Keswick is also located within the historic county boundaries of Cumberland.

Keswick is a rather old market town, as it was first granted a charter for market in 1276. This charter was granted by Edward I. The market is still held today, and takes place every Saturday along the main street that runs through the town. The market place is also where one would find Moot Hall, which was once the town hall but today is the tourist information office.

For some time during the 16th century many knew of Keswick because of the mining that went on in and around the town. The town was actually the source of the first graphite pencil, an industry that continued until 2008 when the company who processed the pencils moved so they could work on the Irish Sea coast.

Keswick today is not all that different than it was when it started, serving mainly as a market town. In addition to being a market town, most of the businesses are related to tourism. Tens of thousands of people make their way through the small market town each year. The Keswick Tourism Association publishes a well known tourist guide that is touted to be one of the better guides that provides all of the local detail so that those who are visiting the area are sure to see and do everything their heart could desire. Festivals are held in the town in the market area and every year there is a marathon that starts in Keswick, so there are always things to see and do in this relatively small town.
