Belfast City Guide |
Belfast is located in Northern Ireland, and is actually the capital of the largest city in the area. Belfast is a word from Irish descent meaning “mouth of the sandbars”. The city is the largest area in the province in which it is located and it is also the second largest city on the island of Ireland and the 15th largest in the United Kingdom with a population of 267,500, although the surrounding metropolitan area has a population closer to 500,000. Belfast is a rather old city, receiving its city status in 1888.
Throughout history Belfast has been an area filled with industry as well as sources of higher education, business, legal centers, and arts. Though the city has gone through times where it has not done as well due to conflict and destruction, Belfast is known as the economic epicenter of Northern Ireland. In addition to being the epicenter of business, Belfast is also a port city, which means that there are industrial and commercial docks along the Lough shoreline.
Belfast is listed as one of the Top 12 Destinations to Visit in 2009, according to Frommer’s, which is a travel guidebook. The area is known for its beautiful architecture as there are different styles to take in, all of which are equally beautiful. For instance, City Hall is an Edwardian style architecture while the Waterfront Hall is very modern and the Lininehall Library is very Victorian in appearance. If you like architecture you will love Belfast! There are also a lot of parks and gardens to enjoy while in Belfast such as the Lagan Valley Regional Park, Colin Glen, Botanic Gardens, River Lagan, Cave Hill Country Park, and more. If you like to spend your time outdoors in lush greens and gardens, one will love Belfast. |
