Birmingham City Guide

Birmingham is considered a city but is also a metropolitan borough that is located in England. Birmingham is a well known city, due in large part because it is the second most populated British city. A 2006 estimate book the population of Birmingham over the one million mark.

Birmingham is known as the workshop of the world or even the city of a thousand trades, as it is the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution in England. While the industry in the Birmingham area is not as important as it once was, it is now a national commercial center and is considered the second best place to locate a business in the United Kingdom. Due in large part to the industry, Birmingham has been ranked as the 55th most livable city in the world and the second most livable in the United Kingdom.

Birmingham attracts many people who want to live in the area due to the population and the ability to do business. Other people come because Birmingham has a lot to offer in the way of culture and arts. Birmingham has a very unique musical history and is often said to be where heavy metal music was created. Members of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and even Led Zeppelin were originally from Birmingham. The music roots are still strong in Birmingham with festivals attracting tourists from wide and far.

Architecture also attracts a lot of people to Birmingham as there are buildings that beautifully represent the architecture of their time. For instance, you will find that Birmingham has architectural styles from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is often interesting to see these buildings side by side. In addition to the architecture, the ability to spend time on the water in the canals is an attraction, as is the country side that surrounds the greater Birmingham area.
