Halifax City Guide

Halifax is a market town located in West Yorkshire, England. The area is well known and has a population of just over 82,000 according to the 2001 census. The area was established as a woolen manufacture from about the 15th century going forward. Internationally speaking, Halifax is very well known for its Mackintosh toffee and chocolate. Other familiar names in the town are the Halifax bank and the Shibden Hall.

Halifax features some interesting landmarks such as the Piece Hall. The Piece Hall was formerly the cloth hall. This is where the trading of woolen cloth pieces took place. The Piece Hall first opened on the in January of 1779 and was open for two hours on Saturday mornings and features 315 different trading rooms. When the cloth industry became more modernized the Piece Hall was made into a public market. For a time the Calderdale Industrial Museum was also located in the Piece Hall, although it has since closed down.

The Dean Clough Mill is another landmark specific to the area. This is found beside the Victorian Gothic Style North Bridge and was built in the 1840’s. The mill was built for Crossley’s Carpets which was owned by John Crossley. The mill was once the largest carpet factory in the world. It has since been converted to a business park and has been thriving since the 1980’s. Halifax Town Hall is another interesting landmark. It was a building that was designed by Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament in 1863.

The town of Halifax has many sport clubs. The rugby league club plays in League One and the town has a football team, the FC. Halifax Town that plays in the Northern Premier League Division One North. Both teams use The Shay football ground, which is the largest ground used by a non-league football club in England.
