Colchester City Guide |
Colchester is the largest town and settlement located in the borough of Colchester, which is located Essex, England. The population of the town is right around 180,000 and is notable because it is the oldest known Roman town located on the British Isles. The town is also said to be the oldest town in Britain and in addition they are said to have the oldest market on the records. Colchester is a relatively popular place to settle as it is just 56 miles north and east of London, so it is just far enough from the city but close enough to be convenient for those who need to commute or travel to London from time to time.
Colchester has an oceanic climate and gets about 18 inches of precipitation per year. While officially the area is said to have an oceanic climate, it is also able to qualify as a semi arid climate and this is because it has less than 500mm of average rainfall per year. Unlike other parts of the British Isles, this area is more prone to drought than it is to flooding.
Colchester is known as being important to the military and has been since the Roman era. The Colchester Garrison is home to the 16th Air Assault Brigade. Also on the outskirts of town is the Glasshouse, which is a military prison that is home to men and women who have served that have been sentenced to a period of detention for wrong doing.
For those who are looking for culture, Colchester has plenty to offer. The town is home to many museums such as the Castle Museum. In addition there is the Hollytrees Museum, and the Natural History Museum. Others will enjoy the Tymperley’s Clock Museum as well. In addition to museums is a theatre, the Mercury Theatre, which is one of the largest and most well known theatres in the area. Live music can also be enjoyed at The Twist and Charter Hall.
