Croydon City Guide

Croydon is located in what is known as the commercial center of Greater London and is the main settlement in the London Borough of Croydon. The commercial center is located about 9 miles south of Charing Cross and is a major metropolitan area in the London plan. Croydon has a long history and originally had just one church, one mill, and less than 400 residents. It was during the Middle Ages that Croydon grew and became known as a market town where charcoal was produced, leather was tanned, and brewing was a maintain of the economy. It was in 1803 that Croydon became a main stop on the Surrey Iron Railway which became a means of transportation that made Croydon what it is today.

Today Croydon is a place where people come to shop, manufacture and buy vehicles, and work. It is the second largest place to shop in the south east, second only after London. Croydon offers a plethora of specialty shops and department stores.

In addition to being a place where people come to shop and work, Croydon is also a place to come for entertainment. There is the Fairfield Halls, which are large concert halls that are used for recordings and plays, and things of this type. This is the home of the London Mozart Players and was even the concert hall where movie The Da Vinci Code was partially filled. Many famous musicians have performed in these halls including but not limited to the Beatles, Chuck Berry, The Monkees, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, and even Coolio.

In addition to industry and the arts there are also many schools that bring people to the Croydon area. With prestigious schools of just about every type, if you want to get an education and you want to get it in Croydon you shouldn’t have an issue. One of the most well known is The London School for Performing Arts and Technology. This is also known as the BRIT School, which is a state funded arts and technology school with a very good reputation.
