Darlington City Guide

Darlington is a town located in the County Durham, which is located England. Darlington has a population of about 100,000 according to the last census. The town is located in what is known as The Gateway to the Tees Valley, which is also known as the Tees Valley. Darlington is located close the The Pennines and the Cleveland Hills. The River Tees and the River Skerne Pass through the town.

Darlington is perhaps most well known because of its involvement with the railroad. The connection is that the first passenger railroad journey ran between Shildon and Stockton on the Darlington and Stockton Railway, which happened in 1825. Of course, later the town was well known for its railway manufacturing. The town was involved in locomotive works, also known as the North Road Shops.

Since the times of old the town has been refurbished, allowing Darlington to be friendlier to pedestrians than ever before. In 2010 a new shopping center is set to open, which will provide the area residents with great shopping opportunities and will likely attract those from outside of Darlington. The town was touched by tragedy in 2008 when the well known King’s Hotel caught fire. The fire damaged the roof and 100 bedrooms, and the hotel had to close for a short time to allow for repairs.

There is much to enjoy in The Civic Theatre. The Civic Theatre hosts many different types of entertainment such as dramas, plays, musicals, and even pantomimes. In the fall the town hosts a festival known as the Rhythm n Brews festival where music and real ale is served and enjoyed while blues and jazz acts perform. In 2004 the Forum Music Center opened and now regularly hosts musical events of all types and even features comedy acts for the enjoyment of Darlington and surrounding area residents.
