Derby City Guide |
Derby is a city that is located in the East Midlands area of England. The city of Derby is located on the banks of the River Derwent and has a population of about 250,000. Derby is the 22nd largest settlement in England. Queen Elizabeth II named Derby a city in June of 1977, but before this Derby was a town that had a cathedral but did not have a city status, which is rare in England.
Derby has many interesting landmarks that tourists as well as residents will enjoy. The Derby Cathedral boasts the third highest Anglican cathedral tower in the country and is a site to be seen! Another popular attraction in Derby is the Derby Gaol, which will take visitors into the dungeons that date back as far as 1756! Others will enjoy the Derby Industrial Museum that features aero engines, railways, mining, foundries, and information on quarrying. Other areas of interest include the Cathedral Quarter, the Darley Abbey, and the Derby Arboretum. In addition visitors might enjoy seeing the Derby Cathedral, the Derby Canal, and the Derby Fairgate Station. Other interesting landmarks are the St. Helen’s House, the Pride Park Stadium, and the River Derwent.
Culture in Derby is big business. Every year Darley Park features an open air concert which is thought to be one of the most well attended free, open air concerts. In addition to the yearly open air concert is the annual summer Prom in the Park rock music concert that happens in July of every year. Theatre is big in Derby as well, with the Derby Playhouse featuring many different stage shows throughout the year. Unfortunately, the Derby Playhouse closed in 2008 due to financial strains. The Robert Ludlam Theatre is still open and features 270 seats that are filled for many different events including dance, art, music, comedy, films, concerts, and more!
