Edinburgh City Guide |
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and is the second most populous city in Scotland. In addition, Edinburgh is also the seventh most populated city in the United Kingdom. Also of note, The City of Edinburgh Council is one of Scotland’s 32 local government council areas. The city of Edinburgh is located in southeast Scotland and is found on the east coast of the Central Belt on the Firth of Forth not far from the North Sea. Edinburgh is well known for its architecture and beautiful scenery. More than one million people visit Edinburgh each year, which makes it the second most visited destination in the United Kingdom, second only to London. In 2009, Edinburgh was voted the number one place to live in the United Kingdom.
Edinburgh has a long history with evidence of settlements that date back to the Bronze Age. Throughout time people have been drawn to this area, which is evident by the very old and beautiful architecture that this area is known for.
Edinburgh is also known for cultural events and opportunities. Many travel to the city of the Edinburgh Festival, which has been happening annually since 1947. This festival involves theatre productions, musical performances, and more! The Edinburgh Comedy Festival also has a large draw, as does the Edinburg Book Festival, and the Edge International Film Festival. All of these festivals mean a large influx of tourists every year from around the world.
Edinburgh also attracts those who want to learn while being entertained. Museums are found in abundance in Edinburgh with some of the more notable museums being the Museum of Scotland, the Royal Museum, the National War Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Edinburgh, and the Museum of Childhood. Other notable places to visit along this same vein are the National Library of Scotland and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
