Exeter City Guide |
Exeter is a city that is located in Devon, England. The city is a country town of Devon and is also the home of the Devon County Council. Exeter is located on the River Exe and is found about 37 miles north and east of Plymouth and 70 miles south and west of Bristol. According to the 2001 census the city of Exeter had a population of just about 111,000. While not all that large by population standards, the city of Exeter has been named one of the top ten most profitable locations to run a business. This is probably due in large part to the fact that the city is easy to travel to and from via the railway stations, M5 motorway, and even through the Exeter International Airport. While there is some tourist activity, tourism is not the mainstay of the city of Exeter.
There are some great things to be seen in Exeter. For instance, the cathedral is beautiful and will attract many. It was built in 1050 and is one of the most visible buildings in the city. Another place to visit would be the ruins of Rougemont Castle. This is the place where many people were hanged for witchcraft and other misdeeds in the 1600’s. Others will enjoy the Guildhall, which is the oldest municipal building in England, which is surprisingly still in use and still kept up well. The guild of Tuckers and Weavers is another sight to see, which is an old building that is still in use. Parliament Street will be appreciated by most, as this is the center of the city and is one of the narrowest streets in the United Kingdom.
Sports and culture are important in Exeter as they are throughout most of the United Kingdom. Rugby and football are the prominent sports and music and theatre provide some wonderful entertainment past times to those who live in and around the Exeter area. Transportation to and from the area is simple owing to many different transportation forms.
