Gloucester is a city located in Gloucestershire in the southwest portion of England. The city is very close to the Welsh border and is located on the River Severn. Gloucester is about 32 miles north and east of Bristol and about 45 miles southwest of Birmingham. This is a city that is quite old, founded in AD 48 by the Romans and was named Glevum. The city was granted its first charter by King Henry II in 1155.
Gloucester has the characteristics of a county town. It is the 53rd largest settled area in the United Kingdom where population is concerned, with a population of about 125,000. The greater Gloucester area has just about 136,000 residents and is home to more than half of the minority groups that are found in the county. The city is located on the River Severn and is about 114 north and west of London.
There are some areas of interest in Gloucester such as the Gloucester Cathedral, which was dedicated to Saint Peter in 681 and offers some beautiful architecture sights to those who come to visit. This is also the burial place of King Edward II of England. In addition to the cathedral there is some other beautiful architecture, many of medieval and Tudor style, such as the New Inn. There are many churches to behold while you are in the area as well such as the St. Mary de Lode, the St. Mary de Crypt, and the St. Michael church in addition to others.
The Three Choirs Festival is enjoyable for one and all and is one of the oldest and most well attended festivals in Europe. It is held in Gloucester every three years with the next one being held in the city in 2010. If you enjoy theatre, then you will enjoy the Guildhall.
