Guildford City Guide |
A country town, Guildford is located in Surrey, England. Guildfored is also the seat for the borough of Guidlford and the administrative headquarters for the South East England area. The town is found about 27 miles south and west of London. The town dates back to about 410AD when the Roman authority had been removed from Britain. Saxon settlers came to the area around that time, probably in large part because of the Harrow Way. Harrow Way was a track way that crossed the river at this area. The area is said to be named after the golden flowers that bloomed in the area, but this is not known for sure.
Today Guildford is busy English town. It has a High Street that features cobbles and many quant shops and department stores. Guildford is also a market town, with the market being held on Fridays and Saturdays. A farmers market is usually held on the first Tuesday of the month. There are many hotels in which tourists can stay in, including a historic hotel by the name of the Angel Hotel. The Angel Hotel was a coaching stop on the London to Portsmouth stagecoach route. In 2006 Guildford was named as the 9th best place to live in Britain, although it slipped to the 12th best place to live by the next year.
Guildford is a popular place to shop and it is very attractive and well kept. In addition, Guildford is one of the most expensive places to live in the United Kingdom. There are many other things to do in Guildford such as visit museums. The Guildford House Gallery has the most visited art gallery in the region, with more than 120,000 visitors per year. The town also has a theatre, which is the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, which has many productions that were seen in London’s West End. The Electric Theatre is a newer theatre, opening in 1197 and features amateur drama productions and musicians.
If you are looking for entertainment you’ll want to check out the Guildford Civic Hall. This is where the main arts and entertainment events take place. Stoke Park is also the place to be, especially during Guilfest, which is a musical festival that takes place during the summer months. The Surrey County Show is also found here on the last bank holiday Monday in May.
