Bangor City Guide |
Bangor is a city that is located in Gwynedd, Wales and is one of the smallest cities found in all of Britain. It is considered a university city because the city has only 13,725 residents if you don’t count the 10,000 students that live in the area so they can attend Bangor University. Most of the residents, including the students, come from outside of Wales, although about half of the population does speak Welsh.
Bangor can be found on the coast of North Wales near the Menai Straight. Two rivers run through the city which are the River Adda and the River Cegin, though the River Cegin is a much more visible river than the River Adda. People travel in and around Bangor and to and from Bangor via the Bangor railway system, which is located on the North Wales Coast Line, running from Crewe to Holyhead. While small, Bangor is traveled through quite often as larger towns and cities surround it.
Bangor has a very long history as it dates back to the founding of the monastic establishment of the Bangor Cathedral in the very early part of the 6th century AD. The Bangor Cathedral as it stands today is not the same building as it was when the area was first established but it draws many people to the area as does the longest High Street in Wales and Bangor University. Today Bangor draws people in because of their reputation for classical music. Concerts are regularly held in the Powis and Prichard Jones Halls. Bangor is also home to the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, which draws in many tourists throughout the year who want to see the always changing art and museum displays offered in the museum and art gallery. |
