Harrogate City Guide |
A spa town, Harrogate is located in North Yorkshire, England. Harrogate is very popular with tourists due to the spa waters and even the beautiful gardens and tea rooms that are unlike those anywhere else in the world. Many people visit Harrogate and then explore further into the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Harrogate is notable because it is beautiful and it has an attraction that draws people from all over England and the rest of the world. The spa waters are rich in iron, sulphur, and salt, making them a popular and effective health treatment. In the 17th century the waters were known as chalybeate waters, which mean that they are rich in iron. The potential healing effects of the water is what brings people, especially wealthy people, from all around the world. Hence, the town is known as a very wealthy town.
Harrogate has a population of almost 72,000 at the 2001 UK Census with the greater urban area having a population of over 85,000. The area is loved by many because it has a mild and dry climate, which is not as common as cold and wet areas of England. The area is much higher than many other English settlements in altitude and has an average minimum temperature of just below 0 degrees Celsius in January and an average maximum of 20 degrees Celsius in July and August.
There are some beautiful buildings and architecture that are found in Harrogate. For instance, the Royal Hall theatre was designed by Frank Matcham and is beautiful. It is the only surviving Kursaal in Britain. The building has been restored, which was complete in 2007, and opened again in early 2008 by the Prince of Wales.
Betty’s Tea Rooms are very well known in the area and loved by one and all. There is a second team room in the Harlow Carr Gardens that many people love as the tea rooms look over breathtaking gardens. The shopping district is loved by many and is found on Cambridge Street, Oxford Street, and Beulah Street, and James Street where the high street shops can be found. There is also a nice selection of shops on Parliament Street and in the Montpellier Quarter.
