Hereford City Guide |
Hereford is a county town of Herefordshire, England. The town is also a cathedral city and civil parish. Hereford can be found on the River Wye and is about 16 miles east of the border with Wales and is about 23 miles north and west of Gloucester. The town has a population of just over 50,000 people and is the largest settled area in the county. While the town is well populated today, it dates back quite a ways, with the Hereford Cathedral going as far back as 1079. The town is perhaps most well known for the Chained Library.
Richard I of England granted an early town charter in 1189 and called the town a Hereford in Wales. Since then Hereford has been recognized as a city since time immemorial, which was last confirmed in October of 2000. Today the area is known as a local trading area for the agricultural and rural areas that surround the town. Many of the products that are known to come out of Hereford are cider, beer, leather good, nickel alloy, chemicals, cattle, poultry, and of course the famous Hereford cattle breed. Hereford was also known as the home base of the British Special Air Service for many years, although they relocated in the 90’s.
Hereford was founded in 700 AD but today is a standard English town. The town is home to the Hereford United Football Club and also has successful rugby teams as well as successful cricket teams. In addition, the area has a Rowing Club that uses the River Wye for training and competition. This is a very popular sport among men and women of all ages. The river is plenty big enough for all water sports as it is the third largest river in all of Britain.
Hereford is popular in many circles because of the educational options. There are five colleges in the city which include the Herefordshire College of Art, the Herefordshire College of Technology, as well as the Herefordshire Sixth Form College. In addition there is the Royal National College for the Blind, the Holme Lacy College, and the National School of Blacksmithing. These colleges make up much of the traffic that comes in and out of the town of Hereford.
