Buxton City Guide

Buxton is what is known as a spa town located in Derbyshire England. The town is known as “The Gateway to the Peak District National Park”. It is a notable town because it is located at a higher elevation than most market towns of the area. The spa town of Buxton is in an area where it is surrounded by other towns such as Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south.

The reason that Buxton is known as a spa town is because it is home to a geothermal spring. The geothermal spring has a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. The geothermal spring is a huge draw and each spring the wells are decorated, which is a local tradition known as well dressing. The well dressing weekend has a big draw itself and now is much like a carnival including a local fair, carnival, and even live music. Many tourists come just for the well dressing and they’ll come back every year to take part in the festivities which seem to grow in scope with each passing year.

In addition to the carnival the architecture is a big draw for tourism. Much of the architecture is original, attracting those who appreciate old buildings that have been well maintained. Many of the wells and local baths are very ornamental and have been kept up quite well over the years. In addition to the architecture, the area boasts two small motorcycle speedways that also attract a lot of outsiders. Buxton also has a football team, a rugby club, and a hockey club, all of which draw a lot of people to the area to enjoy the sporting events or even participate in them. There are also two 18 hole golf courses in Buxton, which attracts people in the warmer months of the year.
