Isle of Skye City Guide |
The Isle of Skye, or Skye as it is often called, is an island that is located in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. This island is the largest and the most northerly of all of the islands. The Isle of Skye is notable because it has many different peninsulas that seem to work their way outward from a central mountainous point, known as the Cuillin hills. The Isle of Skye is thought to have been settled on by people since the Mesolithic era and has many of different rulers.
Today the Isle of Skye has a population of about 9,200 which is an increase since the census that was done in 1991. The industries that make the Isle of Skye work are tourism, agriculture, fishing, and the distilling of whiskey. About 30% of the permanent residents of the island speak Gaelic.
Isle of Skye is part of what is known as the Highland Council, which is a local government. Because the Isle of Skye is a part of this local government, the island is how linked to the mainland by a road bridge. The island is visited more often since the installment of the bridge as many people come to the island to take in the breathtaking views, experience the different culture, and take in the wild life. Some of the wildlife that is known to thrive on or around the Isle Of Skye include but are not limited to the Red Deer, the Golden Eagle, and the Salmon. Visitors will usually take the road bridge, although the tolls are quite high, while others will ride ferries to the island and then return to the mainland after a day or sometimes several days.
The Isle Of Skye boasts a mild oceanic climate that come from being in the Atlantic Ocean and also being in the Gulf Stream. The temperatures are rather cool with the warmest month being July and day time highs of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest month of the year is January with day time highs of about 44 degrees Fahrenheit. The island gets plenty of rain, usually seeing 60 to 80 inches of precipitation per year.
