Ipswich City Guide |
Ipswich is a district that is located in the county town of Suffolk, England. The district is located on the estuary of the River Orwell and is near the towns of Felixstowe, Harwich, and Colchester. As of the 2007 UK Census, Ipswich has an estimated population of about 13,000 people. While the area is quite old, it has been upgraded in recent years to draw more and more people to the area to live and work.
Ipswich is home to the Tolly Cobbold brewery. This is a brewery that was built in the 19th century and then rebuilt in 1894. The brewery is one of the most well known and highly esteemed Victorian breweries found in the United Kingdom. The brewery attracts many to the area for a tour!
The town center features a glass building that is owned by Willis, which is called the Willis Building. The building is known as the youngest Grade I building in Britain. Despite the interesting building in the centre of town and having one of the finest Victorian breweries in the United Kingdom, Ipswich is still only seen as a town. Ipswich residents have tried on several occasions to be named a city, but they have not as of yet been awarded the city status. Many people blame the town status on the fact that Ipswich does not have its own cathedral and most cities in Britain have a cathedral.
Ipswich is called home by many different artists. This is due in large part to the possibilities to display art work all over the town. There are galleries at the Christchurch Mansion, the Town hall, and even a gallery in the Ancient House and the Artists Gallery in Electric House. In addition there is the Ipswich Museum that often attracts art as does the Ipswich Transport Museum.
Every year since 1991 there has been an annual arts festival known as the Ip-Art. This is a great event that allows for artists of every type to come out and show off their works of arts. It also invites 50 different performing acts to perform on seven different stages. Artists and tourists from all around the world have been coming to this art festival to see the sights.
