Liverpool City Guide

Liverpool is a city as well as a metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. The city is located along the eastern edge of the Mersey Estuary. The city has a population of about 440,000 and is found in the center of the greater Liverpool Urban area that has a larger population of about 820,000. Liverpool is a city with history as it was founded as a borough in 1207 and was then given city status in 1880. A large part of the reason that the city was given the city status is that it is also a major port and the trading from many areas of the world made this a main hub that saw a growing population. By the early 19th century, more than 40% of the world’s trade was passing through the Liverpool port, which is why the city came about at all.

Liverpool residents are often called Liverpudlians but are more commonly known in the region as Scousers. This name was taken from a popular local dish called scouse. Scouse is a stew like meal, although the name has not only been applied to the people and the dish, but also to the accent that those who live in this area speak with. Many people from all around the world have moved to Liverpool and are now called Scouse!

Liverpool is popular because it is associated with The Beatles as a variety of other musical groups from that era. This association still continues to drive tourism and it is a part of the economy of the city today. There is a lot to see and do when you are in the area, which is also part of the big draw of the city. There are some beautiful places that actually have been granted the title of World Heritage Site. These sites are Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown street.

The Liverpool area has what we call a temperate maritime climate, which means that the city has cool summers and mild winters. High temperatures are in July and usually have a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Low temperatures can be found in January when high temperatures are 44 degrees Fahrenheit.
