Sheffield City Guide |
Sheffield is located in what is known as the commercial center of Greater London and is the main settlement in the London Borough of Sheffield. The commercial center is located about 9 miles south of Charing Cross and is a major metropolitan area in the London plan. Sheffield has a long history and originally had just one church, one mill, and less than 400 residents. It was during the Middle Ages that Sheffield grew and became known as a market town where charcoal was produced, leather was tanned, and brewing was a maintain of the economy. It was in 1803 that Sheffield became a main stop on the Surrey Iron Railway which became a means of transportation that made Sheffield what it is today.
Today Sheffield is a place where people come to shop, manufacture and buy vehicles, and work. It is the second largest place to shop in the south east, second only after London. Sheffield offers a plethora of specialty shops and department stores.
In addition to being a place where people come to shop and work, Sheffield is also a place to come for entertainment. There is the Fairfield Halls, which are large concert halls that are used for recordings and plays, and things of this type. This is the home of the London Mozart Players!
In addition to industry and the arts there are also many schools that bring people to the Sheffield area. With prestigious schools of just about every type, if you want to get an education and you want to get it in Sheffield you shouldn’t have an issue as there are plenty of universities to choose from.
