Folkestone City Guide |
Folkestone is a town located in the Shepway District of Kent, which is in England. The town of Folkestone is often called a seaside resort but there is much more to the town than a resort like atmosphere. While there was settlement in the area dating back as far back as time, it was not until the 19th Century that Folkestone was widely inhabited and used to its full capacity. The storms that are known to batter the area kept ships and boats from being able to port until then. In 1807 an Act of Parliament was passed to build the pier and harbor. By 1820 the harbor was about 14 miles and was enclosed and at this time trade and population increased an the area great. In 2006 new plans were created to rebuild the harbor, allowing for it to also serve as a marina which will help to bring more people to the area and even increase trade.
For a long time the shipping trade was the mainstay of Folkestone but this is no longer the case. Car conversion manufacturers have brought employment to the area, as have the US based Arm and Hammer company, and Silver Spring Mineral Water Company Limited. In 2007 a shopping center, the Bouverie Place opened, bringing more people to the area to shop.
There are some interesting landmarks in Folkestone. The most notable landmark is the Harbor, but aside from this, the Leas are very popular with tourists. The Leas are the cliffs that are located above the beach and are truly beautiful. Cheriton Hill is located above the Channel Tunnel terminal and on this hill is a carving of the Folkestone White Horse which is also interesting to see. The Brockhill Country Park is also a great place to visit and features many different footpaths that take visitors around a lake, down into a valley, and eventually links up with the Royal Military Canal.
