Solihull is a large town that is located in the West Midlands, England. The town has a population of about 100,000 and is located about nine miles to the south and east of Birmingham. Solihull is the largest town in the larger Metropolitan Borough of Solihull that has over 200,000 residents. The town is also considered to be the most prosperous town in the English Midlands. The residents of this large town are known as Sihillians. The town motto is “Urbs in Rure: which means Town in the Country.
Solihull has many interesting landmarks that tourists as well as residents will enjoy. The Solihull Cathedral boasts the third highest Anglican cathedral tower in the country and is a site to be seen! Another popular attraction in Solihull is the Solihull Gaol, which will take visitors into the dungeons that date back as far as 1756! Others will enjoy the Solihull Industrial Museum that features aero engines, railways, mining, foundries, and information on quarrying. Other areas of interest include the Cathedral Quarter, the Darley Abbey, and the Solihull Arboretum. In addition visitors might enjoy seeing the Solihull Cathedral, the Solihull Canal, and the Solihull Fairgate Station. Other interesting landmarks are the St. Helen’s House, the Pride Park Stadium, and the River Derwent.
Culture in Solihull is big business. Every year Darley Park features an open air concert which is thought to be one of the most well attended free, open air concerts. In addition to the yearly open air concert is the annual summer Prom in the Park rock music concert that happens in July of every year. Theatre is big in Solihull as well, with the Solihull Playhouse featuring many different stage shows throughout the year. Unfortunately, the Solihull Playhouse closed in 2008 due to financial strains. The Robert Ludlam Theatre is still open and features 270 seats that are filled for many different events including dance, art, music, comedy, films, and concerts.
