Winchester is a county town of Hampshire, which is located in the south east region of England. The town is found at the center of the City of Winchester, which is a local government district. Winchester is located at the west end of the South Downs and is also found along the banks of the River Itchen. The area has an estimated population of 45,000.
Winchester was originally known as Winton, but today is known as Winchester. The town is a historic cathedral city, as well as the ancient capital of Wessex and he Kingdom of England. The town was first settled by the Romans. The most notable landmark in the town is the Winchester Cathedral, which was one of the largest Cathedrals in England. The Cathedral is known to have the longest nave and overall length of all of the gothic style cathedrals in Europe!
Winchester is easy to get in and out of thanks to the railway station. The railway station is served by many different trains including the London Waterloo, the Weymouth, Portsmouth, Southhampton, and North.
There are many things to see when you visit this town. One that should not be missed is the Cathedral Close. This is actually a gathering of historic buildings from the time that the cathedral was a priory. The Deanery dates back to the 13th century. You might also want to check out Pilgrim’s Hall. Wolvesey Castle and Palace are also popular locations to check out, dating back to 1110. The Winchester Castle is also worth checking out when you are in the area, this is where you can see King Arthur’s Round Table. It has been hanging in the hall since 1463 and is really a sight to be seen! Winchester Castle is famous for this table so it is worth taking a look.
